The 2020 announcement
Short answer
Xbox Games Showcase 2020 announced State of Decay 3. Studio later said that trailer was a concept — the game was still a Word doc. Do not treat 2020 shots as the 2026 build.
What happened
2020: cinematic-style announce, huge hype, then years of quiet. 2026: studio head / directors have been explicit that the old trailer was an early concept, not a vertical slice of the shipping game.
Why the gap
Undead Labs grew, engine changed (UE5), multiplayer/shared-world scope grew, and Xbox’s decade was messy. Pre-production into a real alpha is a long walk. That is not unique to SoD. It is still a long walk.
Use 2026, archive 2020
Lore tone and 'community of survivors' still apply. Specific guns, faces, and base kits from the 2020 piece are mood boards. The June 2026 gameplay is the build we pre-wiki.
