Boiling
Heat makes pond water a maybe
Short answer
A pot on a fire can make dirty water less stupid. Tablets are the other door. Wells are still free.

How it works
Boiling is a reason to carry a pot. It is not a reason to trust every puddle. Sea water is still a bad idea.
What to do
Prefer a well. Boil if you must. Tablets if you have them.

Don't drink the pond just this once. Don't invent a boil-second table.
